About

i am julika, an artist/maker from hamburg.

i make silver jewellery objects and other things of conditional usefulness. sometimes i write.

  • my work moves in a place that jewelry does not enter all too frequently — namely that of language. here, language is not decoration but the very substance of the pieces themselves; their titles are not product names but attitudes. formally, the pieces feel deliberate and, in the best sense, unfinished. they are organically and individually modeled and marked by an intentionally visible hand. the modeling wax leaves traces, and no cast piece is polished to the point of anonymity. this corresponds thematically with what is often described with (and on) the objects themselves: the concern is with the provisional, the tentative, the incomplete, as this - for me - is precisely the place, in both work and everyday life, where truth can be found.

  • each piece is made using the lost-wax casting process, also known as "cire perdue" — lost form. in this process, the mould, in which the wax-carved object is embedded and then burnt, must be destroyed in order to reach the silver-cast object. this process makes every piece one-of-a-kind.

  • in my workshops, i don't aim to pass on a technique, but to create a space where experimentation matters more than perfection. wax as a material invites exactly that: it is soft, yielding, forgiving, and malleable. this gives participants a freedom to experiment that not only places the process above the result, but also opens up the possibility for surprises.

  • more frequently than not my pieces (aim to) carry quite a bit of weight. if you are purchasing a julika hartz piece its weight is most likely to be felt rather prominently on the hand. i am always suggesting to keep this in mind when considering adding one of my works to your personal collection.
