BEHIND WORDS #2
by Julika Hartz
hi again – this time:
ON FREEDOM AND SIMPLE PROMISES
27/02/2025
as an artist and a human being, the concept of freedom is one i feel very deeply, immediately and absolutely. my freedom of speech, freedom of choice, freedom of place, my freedom of expression, they are all closely connected with how i define myself. but when i look around, and over the edge of my like-minded fairy bubble, i see that more and more people, most likely driven by fear, envy or greed, forget that it is a feeling that should be self-evident and implicit in each and everyone of us. that no one should fear having their freedom taken away by others. that we, who are enjoying the privilege of feeling free, who are free, are not only the protectors of it, but also the performers, the models and - more importantly and to the greatest extend possible - the providers.
with my newest body of work which is being cast in silver as we speak, i try to do what nina simone (without putting me in her shoes, but in recognition of her vision) would suggest any artist should do: to reflect the times.
to do so, i wrote a piece of 282 words called "this is not the time" and applied it onto 10 different objects, which may serve as rings, pendants and/or small sculptures. the piece is dealing with the topics of fear, empathy and simple promises and is aiming to provide you with a sense of togetherness and compassion, instead of division and demarcation.
with my next newsletter (yes, please, do stay tuned!) you will be the first to receive a link to view and read these ten new pieces and with it the chance of possibly making one your own. this way, i am hoping to contribute in my own way to create and be part of a community, that intends to connect and keeps connecting - that reflects and keeps reflecting.

on another but still very much communal note:
THERE ARE WORKSHOPS COMING IN MARCH!
as you may have noticed, within my works i do not concentrate too much on perfect craftmanship, but rather on the right tone, the right mood, the right shape, the right word and also: the right bit of chance. with my workshops i am intending to do the same and instead of showing you 'how things are done' i am inviting you to join me in my way of creating, of thinking about form and content, about what it is we want to say or show, to keep or share.
with this letter you are the first to find out out about my two workshop offers: to create your very own silver pendant or your very own silver ring. feel free to click on the button below to learn more and - if it sounds like this could be something right up your alley - book yourself a place. there are 5 spots for each workshop. after the weekend the link will be shared with the wider public. but for now, please enjoy the browse and i'll hopefully see you soon!
stay warm, stay close.
until next time, j.
