DEMOCRAT + HUMANIST

this series is a commitment to showing up for a more democratic and more humane society and to preserve that which was built by a generation marked by grief and guilt, who promised themselves and us: 'never again'. this body of work is an adoption of that promise — and a refusal to let it go quietly.

at the heart of this work - and at the heart of this life - stands the encounter of two people: the fundamental unit of interaction, of relation, and of everything that passes between us. the figures move awkwardly. their gestures are uncertain, unpolished, perhaps even a little clumsy. and while this clumsiness is often mistaken for failure, it is in fact quite the opposite: it is courage. because moving awkwardly together is always the braver choice than remaining still and separate. when we endure one another, accept one another, reach toward one another — even clumsily — something new can emerge. and while retreating may always feel like the easier path, it closes doors. the awkward dance keeps them open.

and then there are the hands, to which the work - and this life - returns again and again. not as symbols of power, but as instruments of making. hands that make a difference, make good, make peace, make amends. hands that make room for someone else, that make an effort when it would be easier not to. in the hands lives the possibility of repair, of care, and of all the small and large acts through which people meet each other halfway. these are the hands we want to talk about. these are the hands we want to be.
